A Few Thoughts on Process vs. Goals

It's important to understand the difference between process-oriented work and goal-oriented work. This workbook is oriented entirely around the process. What this means is that it's not designed to reach a specific goal. It's not meant to make you eat healthier or sleep better or be less afraid or experience less pain (though these things may happen as a result, they're not the goal).

Instead of focusing on specific achievements and tasks which need to be accomplished, the workbook is designed to assist with the process of exploring one's self and one's attitudes. It's designed to raise awareness, not to tell you what you're doing and whether it's right or wrong. Instead of being a hierarchical (as in, "we know what you need to do, and we're here to fix it for you") it's designed to be holistic and self-oriented (as in "you have the ability to know and discover what's best for yourself, and we can only provide minimal assistance, while you do all the work.")

In other terms, it's about healing yourself instead of having someone else cure you. The notion is not that you are a being separate from a disease and you need to be fixed to be rid of a disease. It's that everything you are is part of you, and that before you can really resolve this, you need to be aware and conscious as to what you are and how you behave. It further means exploring the relationships between yourself and the various issues you face.
