GeeQ is an e-mail list devoted to discussion of science fiction from queer perspectives. Yes, many of us are geeks. Yes, many of us are queer. As the saying goes, that's what we're here for.

We are not here to defend our sexual orientation, gender identity, queerness or geekiness. We are here to revel in these things. Anyone who can respect this is welcome.

The Rules

The list rules are quite simple and straightforward:
  • Any sci-fi and/or fantasy medium is fair game for a topic. Discussing sci-fi/fantasy from queer perspectives does not require that the story be intended to be queer or explicitly so. For instance, discussing slash (same-sex romance) potential regarding Kirk and Spock is acceptable, even if no such plotlines are suggested or accepted by writers and producers of Star Trek.

  • One not need be queer or identify as such in order to enjoy this list.

  • Do not forget about spoiler space. This is a must. This is not just about current shows or books, but ones which are twenty years old. Whether it's for the most recent Star Trek movie, or whether a specific episode of The Prisoner, you need to include spoiler space. It's not difficult. Just do it.

  • Disliking any particular movie, show or story is perfectly acceptable, but attacking people on a personal level for liking them is not. In fact, attacking people on a personal level for any reason whatsoever is entirely unacceptable. What does this mean? It means that while saying that you find the plotlines on Babylon 5 dull and uninteresting is fine but saying that "only a moron" would enjoy Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or that someone would have to be blind to not see one specific and particular viewpoint is out of line.

  • There are lots of perspectives that can be considered queer or feminist. Remeber this. Just because a queer perspective is not your queer perspective does not mean that it is not a valid one.

  • This list is not the place to post fan fiction. However, it is a perfect place to announce it's availability on the world wide web. Fan fiction is great. It is strongly encouraged. It, however, tends to fill up people's mailboxes with great ease. So, please-- get someone to put your fan fiction on a web page, and provide the URL for it so we can all enjoy it, without it filling our mailboxes.

  • Any individuals who is respectful of other list members and are capable of behaving themselves are welcome to join this list. Discussion of who does and does not "belong" on the list based on their sexual orientation or gender identity is entirely out of bounds.

  • Try to avoid excessive quoting. Quote only that portion of the list to which you are responding.

  • Finally, enjoy yourselves. The chief function of this list is fun.
