The Thalamus

The thalamus is a large, two-lobed structure located at the top of the brain stem. It contains several relay nuclei, most of which lead directly to the cortex.
Massa Intermedia
The massa intermedia is the structure which joins the two lobes of the thalamus together.

Lateral Geniculate Nuclei
The lateral geniculate nuclei (LGN is an important relay system in visual processing. It conveys information about visual reception from the occipital lobe to the temporal and parietal lobes.

Medial Geniculate Nuclei
An imporant sensory relay for auditory functions.

Ventral Posterior Nuclei
An important relay for the somatosensory systems.
