The thalamus is a large, two-lobed structure located at the top of the brain stem. It contains several relay nuclei, most of which lead directly to the cortex.
- Massa Intermedia
- The massa intermedia is the structure which joins the two lobes of the thalamus together.
- Lateral Geniculate Nuclei
- The lateral geniculate nuclei (LGN is an important relay system in visual processing. It conveys information about visual reception from the occipital lobe to the temporal and parietal lobes.
- Medial Geniculate Nuclei
- An imporant sensory relay for auditory functions.
- Ventral Posterior Nuclei
- An important relay for the somatosensory systems.
